Street Beat
What we do
This program assists Koori young people to access services that they would otherwise have difficulty accessing. Many of the clients are at risk of homelessness and alcohol/drug use, and need intensive support to get back on track. Service delivery includes a lot of outreach work. This involves meeting young people on their “own turf” to build trust and facilitate positive relationships. Accompanying young people to appointments initially is important to ensure successful referrals and follow up. Once the young person has developed the skills, knowledge and confidence to deal with their casework issues themselves, they can begin to step into that responsibility more independently.

Young people can access the bus by calling a free call number up till 1 am to inform the workers where they need to be picked up.
The bus does not operate as a taxi service and so does not transport young people out to social venues. It is designed to minimize harm to young people by taking them home or to another safe place.
The service is available to young people Thursday 10pm – 1am and Friday and Saturday 10pm – 1am. Police and other services can call the bus up till 2.30am.
